Sala Olavide: the beginning of the legacy\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This first room is dedicated to the founder of the Museum, where we take a brief historical tour of the main milestones of Olavide’s legacy: the museum, the atlas of the iconographic clinic and the micrographic laboratory.<\/p>

Moulages were created to teach dermatology in times when color photography was not well developed, and visits to the wards by medical students were not permitted.<\/p>

Olavide sets out to create a collection of dermatological figures showing all the skin diseases known at that time, as well as the different clinical symptoms and locations of the skin lesions and all of this…in three dimensions!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sala Az\u00faa: syphilis as an epidemic<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This room is dedicated to who is considered Olavide’s successor, Juan de Az\u00faa. He was a dermatologist and a syphilographer who knew how to quickly adapt to the change of ideas by promoting dermatology based on histopathology. Among his many achievements, he created the Spanish Academy of Dermatology in 1909 and founded the scientific journal Actas dermo-sifiliogr\u00e1ficas, where the most important cases and treatments were published, many of them from the San Juan de Dios Hospital.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sala Zof\u00edo: the art of wax\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hemos visto que las figuras de cera del Museo Olavide, eran realizadas para la ense\u00f1anza de la Dermatolog\u00eda. Pero, \u00bfQui\u00e9n las creaba? En esta sala os los mostramos. El primer artista y m\u00e1s prol\u00edfico, Enrique Zof\u00edo D\u00e1vila (1835\u2013\u00bf1915?), se form\u00f3 en Bellas Artes en la Real Academia de San Fernando de Madrid. Era militar y estuvo contratado como escultor anat\u00f3mico. A partir de 1870 trabajar\u00e1 para Olavide elaborando figuras de cera de los pacientes ingresados en el Hospital San Juan de Dios donde lleg\u00f3 a realizar m\u00e1s de 400. Su sucesor, Jos\u00e9 Barta y Bernadotta (1875\u20131955), continu\u00f3 con su labor. El \u00faltimo, Rafael L\u00f3pez \u00c1lvarez (1889-1987) es, entre otras cosas, el encargado en embalar y preservar el museo para que haya llegado hasta nuestros d\u00edas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sala Castelo: enfermedades malditas<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Esta sala est\u00e1 dedicada a Eusebio Castelo, amigo personal y colega del Dr. Olavide en el Hospital San Juan de Dios. Fue un m\u00e9dico sifil\u00f3grafo ilustre del S. XIX, tanto que una de las calles que hoy linda con el Hospital San Juan de Dios, est\u00e1 dedicada a su persona. Junto a Olavide fue el otro gran impulsor del museo, muchas de las figuras m\u00e1s antiguas, est\u00e1n realizadas bajo su supervisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sala Sainz de Aja: tumores en la piel<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

S\u00e1inz de Aja fue un m\u00e9dico dermat\u00f3logo del S. XX, muy vinculado a t\u00e9cnicas quir\u00fargicas que practicaba en el mismo Hospital San Juan de Dios. Y por ello, en esta sala mostramos una gran variedad de neoplasias o tumores, en su mayor\u00eda malignos y que son motivo de consulta e intervenci\u00f3n hoy, en los servicios de dermatolog\u00eda.\u00a0<\/p>

Afortunadamente, gracias a la informaci\u00f3n, a las comunicaciones y sobre todo a la prevenci\u00f3n sanitaria, muchos de los casos que se muestran en esta sala no suelen llegar a los estadios que aqu\u00ed vemos. Pero son muchas y muy variadas las neoplasias que podemos encontrar en la piel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sala S\u00e1nchez Covisa: un despacho con historia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Por fin una sala en la que descansamos de enfermedades. Esta es una sala de consulta y estudio de un m\u00e9dico cualquiera a principios del S. XX. Estos muebles han sido donados al museo por la Dra. Paola Maldonado, que a su vez recibi\u00f3 en herencia de su abuelo que era m\u00e9dico.<\/p>

Preciosos muebles de estilo castellano en madera de roble que adornaban una consulta y que hoy sirven para acompa\u00f1ar los retratos m\u00e9dicos que encontramos tambi\u00e9n en las cajas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Almac\u00e9n: olvido y recuperaci\u00f3n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En el a\u00f1o 1966, el segundo Hospital San Juan de Dios situado en la C\/ Dr. Esquerdo de Madrid, es demolido. En consecuencia, el Museo Olavide se desmonta y se embala. Este trabajo fue dirigido por el \u00faltimo cero-escultor del museo: Rafael L\u00f3pez \u00c1lvarez. En aquel momento, el propio L\u00f3pez \u00c1lvarez concedi\u00f3 algunas entrevistas a peri\u00f3dicos como el ABC o a la revista Qu\u00e9, alertando de que, embalando esta colecci\u00f3n, se condenar\u00eda al olvido un patrimonio cient\u00edfico-m\u00e9dico que hab\u00eda sido fruto del trabajo de casi 100 a\u00f1os y que hab\u00eda servido para formar a las primeras generaciones de dermat\u00f3logos en Espa\u00f1a.
